In practice, this means designing an orchard with vertical and horizontal complexity: an overstory of fruit trees, a midstory of compatible shrubs or smaller trees, an understory of herbs or disease-tuppressing groundcovers, and a dynamic soil zone below. The result is not just more fruit, but a system that mimics natural ecosystems—reducing input needs, buffering weather extremes, and supporting a web of organisms that contribute to pollination, pest control, nutrient cycling, and soil structure. By embracing these principles, growers can move toward resilient farming that still delivers tangible harvests.

A well-planned layer cake of vegetation improves both yield stability and ecological function.
